China has recently announced a package of economic policies to bolster its economy. Cao Chufeng follows a group of foreign businesses in the megacity Chongqing to learn what foreign enterprises think about the policies.
Located in the southwestern part of China, Chongqing serves as a center for finance, manufacturing and transportation for the upstream Yangtze river. This week, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade organized a group of foreign enterprises and chambers of commerce to visit the city, hoping to foster more business and investment opportunities.
REN HONGBIN Chairman China Council for the Promotion of International Trade "Chongqing is indeed a vibrant place with a wide range of investment opportunities, as well as a hub for the overlap of various national strategies and policies."
Dozens of foreign companies and chambers of commerce joined the group tour. They held Q and A meetings with the Chongqing municipal government, and inspected the Liangjiang New Area, a national level opening-up and development area. Although it is still too early to say whether the tour will lead to more deals, participants are optimistic about the place.
KIM HONGKI First Vice Chairman, The Korea Chamber of Commerce in China "Chongqing is the center of the Western Development Policy, and with a population of over 30 million, many South Korean companies are particularly interested in investment opportunities in Chongqing."
LU HAIQING Global Vice President, IHG Hotels & Resorts "Chongqing is huge, Chongqing has potential, and we are not there yet. And our hotels can bring nice things to this market."
About one month prior to the tour, the Chinese government has rolled out a package of policies to bolster its economy, including boosting domestic spending and creating a nicer business environment for private enterprises. And we asked foreign companies whether the policies will affect their business confidence.
LU HAIQING Global Vice President, IHG Hotels & Resorts "If you ask me whether I'm confident in the measures, yes, I'm not worried about the short term. We're really looking at the long term prosperity. That's why we're here, and that's why we'll continue to be here."
ROBIN ZHANG CFO, Genesis Group "From the perspective of foreign investment, we believe these economic policies are very positive. They mainly manifest in enhancing the overall market vitality, promoting the upgrade of market consumption, and improving and optimizing the entire business environment."
CAO CHUFENG Chongqing "Chongqing is seen as one of China's gateways to the world, being a major commercial and tech hub for western parts of the country. Foreign investors believe the municipality has potential for further development and are here exploring those very opportunities. But their interest goes beyond this mega city and its mountains, also spanning to other parts of the country. Cao Chufeng, CGTN, Chongqing."
